These Law Schools Are Especially Tough To Get Into

Admission data, Law School Admission Test (LSAT) scores, and undergraduate grade point averages (GPAs) are among some of the different categories that are used to determine which law schools are the hardest to be accepted into. The Princeton Review’s 2020 law school ranking showed that the 10 schools with the toughest admission processes included:

Yale Law School — Yale Law School has an acceptance rate of 9.7 percent and its 2022 Class includes 3,284 applicants that were 53 percent women with an average age of 25 years of age. The high GPA was 4.24 while the low was 3.32 and the median was 3.93, and the high LSAT was 180 while the low was 155 and the median was 173.

Stanford University School of Law — Stanford University School of Law accepts only 12 percent of applicants and had 3,847 applications in its 2023 Class. The top 75 percent GPA was 3.97 while the low 25 percent was 3.78 and the median was 3.89, while the high 75 percent LSAT was 173 and the low 25 percent was 169 with the median being 171.

Harvard Law School — Harvard Law School has 7,419 applications for the Class of 2022, with 916 admissions offers. The class is 50 percent women and 45 percent students of color, with the 75th percentile GPA being 3.96, the 50th percentile having a GPA of 3.89, and the 25th percentile having a GPA of 3.79. The 75th percentile had an LSAT of 175, the 50th percentile had an LSAT of 173, and the 25th percentile had an LSAT of 170.

University of Virginia School of Law — University of Virginia School of Law had an admission rate of 19.9 percent, as the Class of 2021 included 320 students enrolled from 5,646 applicants. The 75th percentile GPA was 3.97 and the 25th percentile GPA was 3.59, with a median GPA of 3.89. The 75th percentile had an LSAT of 171 while the 25th percentile had an LSAT of 163, and the median LSAT was 169.

Columbia Law School — Columbia Law School had an admission rate of 18.4 percent, as the Class of 2019 included 46 percent women and 45 percent students of color. The 75th percentile GPA was 3.89 and the 25th percentile GPA was 3.69, with a median GPA of 3.80 and an average GPA of 3.77. The 75th percentile had an LSAT of 173 while the 25th percentile had an LSAT of 169, and the median LSAT was 172 while the average was 170.

University of Pennsylvania Law School — The University of Pennsylvania Law School Class of 2022 has 249 enrolled students out of 6,483 applicants. The 75th percentile GPA was 3.96 and the 25th percentile GPA was 3.54, with a median GPA of 3.89. The 75th percentile had an LSAT of 171 while the 25th percentile had an LSAT of 163, and the median LSAT was 170.

University of Chicago Law School — University of Chicago Law School had an admission rate of 15 percent. The 2019 entering class included 52 percent women and 40 percent students of color.

University of Michigan Law School — University of Michigan Law School had an admission rate of 27.9 percent. The Class of 2022 had a median GPA of 3.81 and a median LSAT of 169.

Northwestern University – Pritzker School of Law — Northwestern University – Pritzker School of Law statistics for 2018 showed 245 enrolled students out of 5,319 applicants. The students had a median GPA of 3.84 and a median LSAT of 169.

Duke University School of Law — Duke University School of Law admits fewer than 21 percent of applicants. The 75th percentile GPA was 3.84 and the 25th percentile GPA was 3.56, with a median GPA of 3.76. The 75th percentile had an LSAT of 170 while the 25th percentile had an LSAT of 166, and the median LSAT was 169.

Law school admission can be grueling for all potential applicants.
