Columbia Law School

Columbia Law School is one of the nation’s most prestigious and overall excellent law schools, and having a law degree from this institution makes a person highly marketable. In fact, the top law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP hires more lawyers from Columbia than any other law school.

Academics

Some of the most accomplished and distinguished legal scholars teach at Columbia Law School, so students are learning from the best. Furthermore, this isn’t some ivy-tower program. There are a number of clinics and community-learning programs that give students the kinds of hands-on and practical training and experience they will need to survive the competitive professional world after they graduate.

History and tradition

Columbia Law School has a tradition of excellence that goes back over 150 years. When it comes to defining the law and interpreting the Constitution, professors and alumni has always been right there on the cutting edge, and this tradition shows no signs of stopping going forward through the current century.

The program is about more than just teaching the students the law. Rather, it’s about providing a wealth of experiences and opportunities. There are nearly 100 student groups to join, and an atmosphere of intellectual exploration is encouraged. The Columbia Law School experience is meant to be one of the most vital and positive periods of time in each student’s education.

There is an emphasis on encouraging diversity and recognizing differences in the student experience. There is a student group for Native Americans going into the law, for example, and another one for older students who are going to law school after having worked in other careers. The law school is committed to finding legal talent from all corners of American society.

Connections and community

It’s not always just what you know but who you know as well, and Columbia Law school is simply a fantastic place to build professional connections. There are supreme court justices who went to Columbia Law School as well as partners in some of America’s most high-powered firms. Furthermore, alumni stay in touch and help each other out. In short, attending Columbia Law School gets your foot in the door of the highest levels of the legal profession in the United States.

Dual degrees

As society grows more complex, combining a law degree with studies in another discipline gives graduates a step up on the competition when it comes to finding jobs. For example, one Columbia program combines law studies with advanced studies in architecture and urban planning. Students who earn this particular dual degree enter the job market with a rich mixture of legal and architectural experience on their resumes, and they are prepared for careers working in the many fields connected to the law as it relates to architecture and development.

There is another program that combines legal studies with journalism. This program is for students who want to be practicing lawyers specializing in media and First Amendment legal issues.
