The Forefront of Coronavirus: Attorneys

March 12, 2020 By Mikel Leave a Comment

The coronavirus is providing new opportunities for law practices around the country. Because this pandemic is a new phenomenon, there are many unexpected issues that our country is learning to face on a daily basis. Employee safety, work conditions and chain disruption are all part of the new landscape as the global outbreak continues to impact thousands of people.

The Growing Demand for Attorneys
Since the coronavirus pandemic has swept the nation, there is a growing demand for attorneys. The fields of practice that can help clients manage issues pertaining to the coronavirus range from a variety of challenges. Law firms around the United States have implemented multidisciplinary task forces to assist an array of clientele.

The effects of the coronavirus on the population are widespread. Lawyers are assisting employees, employers and even health care institutions. There is little known about the virus itself, but the impact it has socially and legally around the world is well documented. To better serve the community while creating new jobs for attorneys, there are several areas which are addressed on a regular basis.

The Top 2 Legal Areas Impacted by the Coronavirus
Assisting employers is one of the biggest avenues of legal action occurring in the U.S. Employers want to know how to treat employees who are displaying cold symptoms. They are concerned about self-quarantining. If an employee cannot come into the workplace, many employers are interested in how this impacts paid sick time laws. Health coverage, paid vacation, compliance with the ever-changing CDC updates are all issues that employers must face on a daily basis.

Assisting health care institutions is another huge task that attorneys have recently been exposed to. Health care lawyers mainly address the concerns of the employees and health care officials as well as the broader community. Many attorneys are advising that their clients take a “science-based approach” when focusing on how to move forward, but with new information coming out on a regular basis, these approaches are consistently modified throughout the week.

How Does This Impact The Legal Profession?
Attorneys must also comply with the impact of the coronavirus. While many attorneys can work from home, some can not. Long hours in an office with other lawyers can expose others to the virus itself.

Many firms have adopted a pandemic preparedness plan. Crisis management teams can regularly evaluate the business risks and health concerns. Although law offices are frequently shutting down, many are working remotely so they can continue serving the community. Cloud-based technology has helped a number of firms retain work.

Conclusion
With a growing number of citizens that are concerned about how the virus has impacted their work and health, attorneys are urgently needed. Healthcare providers who may not know the proper way to handle certain medical requests and employers who do not know how to properly keep a workplace safe are just two examples of a growing trend. To stop the continuation of the coronavirus, many have chosen or were told to work from home. Although we may not see law offices open from the street, many are available remotely.
