From maritime to entertainment, the fields of law are extensive. Before enrolling in law school, it’s helpful to know what area of legal practice piques your interest. Below, you’ll find insight into the different types of law that aspiring attorneys can pursue.

Bankruptcy Law

Bankruptcy law studies the problems that individuals and organizations face when declaring bankruptcy. Bankruptcy law lawyers ensure that the bankruptcy procedure unfolds accordingly. Understanding the U.S. Bankruptcy Code is an integral part of being a bankruptcy law attorney.

Civil Rights Law

Civil rights law deals with discrimination and unjust practices that infringe on rights and liberties. Lawyers in this field often work on cases where members of a certain race have been oppressed, religious groups have been victimized, and disabled individuals have been shown prejudice. They also work with institutions of government to balance competing interests.

Criminal Law

Much like its name suggests, criminal law hones in on actions and behaviors that are deemed illegal. Criminal defense attorneys represent clients who have been accused of misconduct, and prosecutors punish those who have engaged in criminal activity. Reaching a verdict requires an in-depth evaluation of individual liberty, responsibilities, and unalienable rights.

Environmental Law

Covering state, federal, and transnational law, environmental law is a diverse sphere that’s concerned with treaties, regulations, and statues. Government agencies and advocacy organizations are some clients that environmental law lawyers may work for. Their cases typically revolve around pollution, land disputes, and natural resource management.

Family Law

Family law refers to familial matters that require legal intervention. In most instances, attorneys in this field work in smaller firms. Adoption, divorce, domestic abuse, and child welfare are some common areas that family law lawyers touch on. The primary role of a family law attorney is to reach an agreement that bodes well for everyone’s interests.

Health Law

Health law is a field that’s growing by leaps and bounds, and it involves legislation that relates to health care. Health law lawyers work with various clients, ranging from patients to clinics. These attorneys are often sought-after to assist in the creation and implementation of policies. Pharmaceutical companies and health practitioners are also likely to seek counsel from health law attorneys.

Immigration Law

From refugee to asylum seekers, immigration law attorneys take on an array of vulnerable clients. Their duty is to facilitate the naturalization process while advising their client on how to comply with the law of their new country. Some aspects of this area of law include bilateral accords and international treaties.

Labor Law

Labor law focuses on legal relations between employees and their employers. If there are any instances of discrimination based on age, gender, or disability, a labor law attorney will step in. This type of law also covers compensation discrimination, harassment, and unlawful bargaining. Though independent, unions are also entitled to labor law attorneys as they see fit.

Military Law

Military law applies to legal affairs in the armed forces. From codes to procedures, the job of a military law attorney is to digest the ins and outs of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. If a military member has been mistreated, a military law lawyer references the UCMJ to uphold justice.

Personal Injury Law

Personal injury law is concerned with seeking justice for those who have been physically or psychologically impaired by intentional or unintentional wrongdoing. Medical malpractice, wrongful death, workplace injury, and collisions are some common cases that personal injury law lawyers work on. It’s not uncommon for these cases to be settled out of court.
