On Friday, May 28, 2021, a reputable Polish Catholic Institute led in the inauguration of a new conservative university. The university Collegium Intermarium was established to inspire, educate, and shape the future of a new cohort of conservative lawyers in Central Europe. Hopefully, it will also elevate and enhance European culture.
The catholic institute, Ordo luris strives to enhance conservative beliefs in respect of the European cultures. For years, they have been pushing to reduce abortion cases and same-sex marriages and unions as they work to promote traditional family relations and structures. They recently presented successful legal petitions for the restriction of abortion rights in Portland and are also leading in the fight against the ratification of the Istanbul Convention. The convention involves an international treaty fighting against domestic violence. It is being objected to with claims that it depicts a wrong idea of family and gender relations.
According to Jerzy Kwasniewski, who heads Ordo luris, the university will be an institute of free academic analysis. He also added that it is finally time to cut down on traditional educational settings which prey on and silence conservative thinkers. The college will counterbalance other institutes such as the Central European University, established by George Soros, an open-minded Hungarian-American investor. This university has been under immense pressure from the national-conservative government of Hungary and, consequently, has been relocated to Vienna from Budapest. As such, the Ordo luris founders and members hope that Collegium Intermarium will transform Europe’s academic sphere for the better.
New Ambitions
Intermarium is a Latin word meaning in between the seas. It represents a region of Central Europe resting between the Black, Baltic and Adriatic seas. It is home to ex-communist countries known to be way more conservative compared to people in Western Europe. The name represents a more significant idea and grand ambitions, however. Kwasniewski expressed the institute’s hope that the university will incorporate conservatives from central Europe to rectify the dominant secular European culture.
The education ministers and polish cultures commended the university as a great place to enhance and nurture the classical and Christian conducts in Europe. In his letter, Mateusz Morawiecki, the prime minister, assured the conservative government to support the university and all it represents.
Suspicion and Hitches
The LGBT community and women’s rights group have viewed Ordo luris with massive suspicion. According to them, this institution works for an international network seeking to erode the rights they have been pursuing over the years.
Recently, Ordo luris had a successful legal petition which was aiming to restrict Portland’s abortion rights. Consequently, the constitutional court ruled that fetal abnormalities are not reasons enough to justify abortions and were unconstitutional. As a result, women are forced to carry unviable and very sick fetuses to term-as this was one of the primary reasons women were having abortions. The ruling was received with a lot of dissatisfaction and even spiked ugly protests all over the country.
Neil Datta, who heads the European Parliamentary Forum On Sexual Reproduction Rights in Brussels, believes that the newly established university is the first step in the right direction. He maintains that the institute will be an incredible training center for a new generation of elites who can change and eliminate far-right thinking to make it more professional and acceptable.
In their defense, Kwasniewski insists that the institute has nothing against women and that the group already respects and includes many women. Abortion is all about the right to life and its violation as it is being performed on little girls.
You can enroll in Collegium Intermarium for an accredited law degree at master’s level and other related programs such as philosophy. Hopefully, you can also register for doctorate programs here in about five years to come. At first, it will be privately funded but will pursue public funding with time.
